Postnasal drip is a condition in which mucus drips down the back of the throat. It is caused by a variety of factors, including colds, flu, allergies, sinus infections, cold temperatures, bright lights, certain foods, hormonal changes, fumes from chemicals or perfumes, certain types of medications, and structural abnormalities such as a deviated septum.

Symptoms:

The primary symptom of postnasal drip is a sore and irritated throat. Other symptoms may include cough, hoarseness, ear and sinus infections.

Treatment:

Treatment for postnasal drip depends on the cause. Over-the-counter medications such as antihistamines, decongestants, saline nasal sprays, and guaifenesin may be helpful. Nasal irrigation with a neti pot and using a humidifier can also help. If a bacterial infection is the cause, antibiotics may be necessary. If GERD is the cause, antacids may be helpful. Clarifix is a simple in-office procedure that can reduce or eliminate postnasal drip and runny nose.

If you have postnasal drip that is severe or does not respond to home treatment, see a doctor.

Additional tips:

  • Drink plenty of fluids to thin mucus.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol, as they can dehydrate you and make mucus thicker.
  • Elevate your head when sleeping to help reduce drainage.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Avoid irritants such as smoke and dust.
